4 mile walk around Shalford and Bramley.

Wey and Arun Canal News

Many DLHG members enjoyed Richard Shenton’s recent talk on the Way and Arun canal.

Sadly, there has recently been some mindless vandalism at Loxwood lock which will cost our friends at the Wey and Arun Canal Trust a lot to fix!

If you can, please make a donation to their appeal at http://weyarun.org.uk/loxwood-appeal
Thank you!

Dorking Society AGM

You are warmly invited to the Dorking Society AGM which this year will be held at Dorking Library on Tuesday 10th May. The Dorking Society is the governing body of the DLHG.

Please arrive after 7pm for a prompt start at 7.30pm. We will conduct the business first, and then we have a presentation on The Dorking of the Future. Our speakers include Ben Lee, local architect, and Peter Brown, author of The Box of Extraordinary Delights, based on the Museum collection and soon to be published by the Museum’s Cockerel Press.

Papers for the meeting will be available on the website, but will also be sent directly to you soon.

If you would like to consider becoming a Trustee of our increasingly dynamic and forward-looking Society, we are seeking individuals with management experience and an interest in Conservation, Community and Planning. In addition, we would welcome any interest from an aspiring Treasurer. Penny Tompkins at penny@cliffhanger.org,uk will be very happy to explain what you need to know and provide a Nomination Form.

Reigate Local History Walk!

On Sunday May 22nd Gavin Dulley will be leading a walk on Reigate’s history. It will start at the Crumb’s Bakery on Bell Street at 2PM and end and hour or so later at the Pilgrim Brewery, where we’ll have a drink in the tap room. Like all of Gavin’s walks, it will be entertaining and informative.

Tickets are £10 and can be bought at https://www.jumblebee.co.uk/reigatebeerwalk

Gavin’s doing this event for a reduced fee. All profits will go to the local Age Concern

Two Local Theatre Trips!

Some DLHG members will be going to see two history-related local plays in the spring.
On Monday March 14th, Guildford’s Mil Theatre (next to the Yvonne Arnaud) delves into some murky German family history with a one-woman musical, “Dispatches on a Red Dress”. See http://www.yvonne-arnaud.co.uk/whats-on/dispatches-red-dress

Then on Sunday 29th May (2PM), we have a female perspective on World War 2, “I Shan’t Be Home to Dinner “. See theleatherheadtheatre.com/whatson/i-shant-be-home-for-dinner/
